We do all of our own coding, so for us it was a simple change.
For those that use an off the shelf CMS like WordPress, you can follow instructions that Graywolf gives on http://www.wolf-howl.com/blogs/thesis-date-hooks/
This has nothing to do with the "May Day" upheaval in the Google results. We saw no change during may. The decrease happened prior to the May Day Google update.

Nothing irks me more than not being able to find the date an article or blog post was published. You may get my traffic, but never my business.

I do not want to be tricked into revisiting a blog post because the author re-dated it. If there was a change, I want to see "updated xx/xx/20xx, original post xx/xx/20xx." I can imagine a student handing in a paper and the instructor declaring "Sorry, but your citation is wrong. This blog was posted after you handed in the paper. I do not allow time travel in my class."
